Forsaken is a novella narrated by Elena Michaels in which foreign werewolves, and Malcolm Danvers, threaten the twins.
Synopsis[]
Being Alpha of the North American Pack is like being a small-town sheriff — nobody wants the job, but someone’s gotta do it. For the most part, Elena Michaels likes it just fine, even if it means dealing with arrogant misogynists in the werewolf world who are convinced that a woman isn’t up to the job. That she could handle. What she never expected was a deadly threat to her eight-year-old twins. That her little girl could go missing in the night.
The enemy thought he was dealing with a hysterical mother. Mother, yes. Hysterical, no. Elena was Alpha for a reason. And nothing would stop her from getting her child back.
Plot[]
Elena and Nick are meeting with the Alpha of the British Werewolf Pack, who thinks Elena is just a figurehead for Clay as the real Alpha. They go in circles and Elena finally leaves with their negotiations unresolved. She heads to Vermont, where Clay and the kids are waiting for her to start their vacation. En route, she learns that Kate has gone missing. Not kidnapped, probably just stormed into the woods as part of her recent bad attitude.
Elena picks up more Pack members at the Sorrentino estate. Once at the cabin, they go out hunting Kate, who clearly used evasive techniques to avoid being followed. At a tiny cabin in the woods, they catch traces of Malcolm's scent and Elena fights not to panic.
Running on no sleep or food, Elena keeps tracking until she passes out. She thinks she sees a hooded figure in the distance, but she can't be sure with her head swimming.
Eventually they find Kate hiding in a log. She had been feeling the restlessness and fever of a someday Change, and went out for some air, then sensed somebody following her.
The Pack all reconvenes at the vacation rental, and Elena devises a plan to keep both the twins and Jeremy safe from Malcolm. They go to a big hotel in the city and lay a trap. Kate's pre-Change symptoms worsen.
Their enemies use a cell-phone blocker, indicating an impending attack, so Clay and Elena go to check out the empty office building across the street. There are familiar scents, and Elena calls the British Alpha to accuse him of allowing some of his wolves to attack the American Pack.
Later, while Elena guards the twins in the hotel room, Kate begins the initial stages of a full Change and they are attacked by British wolves hiding out in the bathroom of a nearby suite. Elena and the twins go back to the office building for cover, where both twins complete their first Change.
Vanessa arrives and provides armed backup. Nick and Clay soon follow. They finally catch the British wolves: the Pack's disgruntled beta, who barely lost the Alpha race, and his followers. They are taken into custody. Elena realizes that Malcolm was never there; they were using a baggie of his clothing to spread his scent around and panic the American Pack.
With the danger over, everyone heads home. After a night of recovery, Elena wakes to a phone call from the real Malcolm. He had called her several times through this debacle with a warning about her pups being in danger. He had come to the United States and laid out Atherton in a tableau in the office building to catch their attention. And now Malcolm has one request: to be allowed to rejoin the Pack.
